Sam Wilson's Website

August 2021

  1. I’ve added two-factor authentication support to Twyne. I’ve had this work done for ages, but just haven’t found time to actually merge and deploy it, but I’ve done that now.

Perhaps at some point I’ll get back to sorting out photos.

  2. A history of the term ‘planet’ for aggregators:

At some point, a couple of other sites emerged with the name “planet” as what I believe was a tongue-in-cheek reference to the “planet” gaming sites. Planet Debian is the first one I remember seeing but I have no idea if it was the first to exist. Many of these sites were built using auto-aggregation from the then-new RSS protocol. This joke ended up spreading pretty far and wide and at one point there was even a “planet planet” to keep track of all the planets2 (although it seems to have gone down sometime in 2017).

  3. It’s a beautiful day here, for day 3 of Wikimania. I’m sitting outside the cemetery cafe, working on the extsjsonuploader tool: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T288920

Yesterday I deployed the new thing that creates a JSON file of the same extension.json data, which means a version-checking thing for mwcli will be possible now (e.g. mwcli extensions:outdated --wiki foo to show a list of current and available versions of extensions for any wiki).

I was just wondering why there are lots of old people coming and going from here, but I guess it’s just that it’s Monday morning and most people have work to do. I feel rather blessed to be able to work from wherever I can sit in the shade.

This café is on OpenStreetMap, but there aren’t enough details, so I’ll fix that up in a minute. There’s a huge amount of other mapping to do around here too, but I think that’s going to have to wait for another day. I’ve got a bunch of family graves that I want to get photos of too: https://archives.org.au/H.M._Wilson_Archives_graves#Karrakatta.2C_Perth
